چکیده

At the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), we have developed a testbed for simulating atmospheric turbulence using Kolmogorov statistics for testing the correctibility of an Adaptive Optical System (AOS). In this testbed, a Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator is being used to induce the atmospheric turbulence and a MEM deformable mirror is being used in the AOS to correct it. This atmospheric turbulence generator can be used to simulate the atmospheric effects on light viewed by an AOS for any telescope aperture with either very poor or very good seeing conditions. This dynamic and expandable system is being used to characterize performance and optimization parameters of our AOS at NRL.

The Effects of Atmospheric Turbulence on Simulated Starlight in a Low-Pressure Telescope Environment

We investigated the feasibility of using nulling interferometry techniques in the stratosphere to search for extra-solar planets. Studies have shown wavefront distortions from atmospheric turbulence to be too large to obtain clear ground-based images. Wavefront errors caused by atmospheric turbulence in the stratosphere are on the scale of 1 angstrom [4], however, the level of the wavefront err...

On an Adaptive Control Algorithm for Adaptive Optics Applications

The wavefront aberrations induced by atmospheric turbulence can severely degrade the performance of an optical imaging system Adaptive optics refers to the process of removing unwanted wave front distortions with the use of a phase corrector before the image is formed The basic idea in adaptive optics is to control the position of the surface of a deformable mirror in such a way as to approxima...

Atmosphere-like turbulence generation with surface-etched phase-screens.

We built and characterized an optical system that emulates the optical characteristics of an 8m-class telescope like the Very Large Telescope. The system contains rotating glass phase-screens to generate realistic atmosphere-like optical turbulence, as needed for testing multiconjugate adaptive optics systems. In this paper we present an investigation of the statistical properties of two phase-...

Coherent Binary Polarization Shift Keying in Free Space Optical Turbulence Channel

In this paper the performance of a binary polarization shift keying (BPOLSK) modulated free space optical (FSO) link employing coherent detection in the presence of the atmospheric turbulence is investigated. First, a closed-form expression for the bit error rate (BER) of a BPOLSK-FSO system is presented taking into account the atmospheric turbulence-induced fading and noise. The BER performanc...

Profiles of the daytime atmospheric turbulence above Big Bear solar observatory

Context. Space weather has become acutely critical for today’s global communication networks. To understand its driving forces we need to observe the Sun with high angular-resolution, and within large fields-of-view, i.e. with multi-conjugate adaptive optics correction. Aims. The design of a multi-conjugate adaptive optical system requires the knowledge of the altitude distribution of atmospher...
